David Weber's "Honor Harrington" series.
David Weber, "The Honor Of The Queen"
The second book in David Weber's Honor Harrington series. I'd call this formulaic space opera, except that there aren't really that many people doing it any more, and Weber does do a very good job; he finds a few more interesting aspects of the technology he introduced in the first book, he introduces a highly-conservative society, explains how it got that way, and how it's likely to change as a result of the events of the book, and there are Big Space Battles. It's convincing and entertaining, even if it's something of a guilty pleasure.
If you liked the first book in the series, this one's even better; if you didn't then you'll probably hate this one too. Recommended for fans of the genre.

David Weber, "On Basilisk Station"
Hard SF space opera: a newly-qualified commander and her experimental ship get assigned to what should be routine patrol duties, but turn out to be far more challenging than anyone had expected. As you'd expect from the author, this has a distinctly naval bent, and fans of C. F. Forester or Patrick O'Brian will feel right at home. The science is handled nicely too; while the mechanics of space travel feel a bit contrived in places, it's applied consistently, and the resulting story was interesting enough to keep me firmly glued to my PDA screen.
Recommended. It's available online from the Baen Free Library; Baen's marketing tactics are clearly working, since I'll look forward to buying the next couple of books in the series...
